About the Area

Marathon is the northern gateway to Big Bend National Park, 60 miles to the south. A true wild west town, Marathon is surrounded by large working ranches, for which the town once served as the hub for shipping livestock by train. The town's historic cattle pens (currently occupied by a small herd of donkeys) still stand alongside the Southern Pacific tracks that run through the center of town.

Now a tourist destination as well as a working ranch town, Marathon boasts several shops, galleries, and restaurants—even featuring live music.
